HOW TO MAKE OVEN CLAY HOME DECOR

IMG_6729.jpg

Below is a super simple and easy step-by-step guide for how to make cute little clay home decor trays made out of polymer clay! I use mine for jewellery and tea light candle holders - you can get creative and create any shape you want really! If you do follow this guide, please comment below on how you found it and send me photos of your creations!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  1. Polymer Clay (I’m using 57g SAHARA FIMO by Staedtler in this guide)

  2. Roller (a normal baking rolling pin is fine)

  3. Glaze + brush (Either glossy or matt - I’m using both FIMO Semi Gloss (matt) + FIMO Gloss Varnish depending on which look I’m after)

  4. Oven + oven dish

1.

Preheat your oven to the temperature your polymer clay package says (this one here was 120 degrees)

Roll out your piece of Polymer Clay (I’m using 57g) until it’s evenly flat and quite thin.

Note: Don’t use Polymer Clay by ‘DAS’ brand - it’s cheap and falls apart in your hands and is very hard to roll out.

2.

Pull up the edges of the clay and form desired shape with your fingers. To give it more structure you can place a jar or candle in the middle.

Once you’re happy with the shape you’ve created, it’s time to put your creation into the oven! Sometimes they can loose shape in the oven and the edges fall flat outwards, so to prevent that from happening you can place them in an oven dish to keep the edges holding up.

I put mine in the oven for an initial 20 mins and then another 10 mins. Every oven is so different, so make sure to check your piece every now and then.

Note: Once you take it out, it will still be soft, so leave it to cool down and it will be hard by the time it’s cooled down. If you move it too early, you might break it ;)

3.

Time to glaze your pieces! This one is super easy, you just glaze the inside and outside of your tray and leave it to try overnight :)

Note: The glaze pictured is for a matt look. For glossy result, I recommend the same brand but the gloss version.
